The Generation Hope family suffered a great loss on September 17, 2016 when Scholar Zoruan Otto Harris was killed in an act of senseless violence while at a community event in his neighborhood in Washington, D.C. Although we were only fortunate enough to have Zoruan in our program for a few months, he had already become a loved member of our tight-knit community.
Zoruan, who graduated from National Collegiate Preparatory High School, was the devoted father of a one-and- a-half year old son, Zoruan Jr. The week he was killed, he was scheduled to start classes at Prince George’s Community College, where he planned to study business, with dreams of entering the sports-management field. Zoruan was the captain of the football team in high school and hoped to play in college as well. In high school, he also participated in Steve Harvey’s mentoring program for young men.
Zoruan was a very special person. He had a smile that could light up a room— everyone who met him noticed that smile! No matter how challenging things were, or how many obstacles he faced in working towards his college degree, he never stopped pushing forward and he never lost his positive attitude. He was completely committed to creating a better life for his son and his family. Zoruan was a proud father, a devoted brother and friend, and a light in his community. We join together with all who knew him in grieving his loss, celebrating his life, and honoring his legacy.
