On Saturday, April 26th, Generation Hope Scholars and Sponsors came together for our Spring In-Service training, held at Strayer University’s DC campus. While the little ones enjoyed playing, building block towers, creating artwork, and watching “Cars,” Scholars and Sponsors gained important information through workshops on Healthy Living and Financial Aid, respectively.
Kristal Dail from Divas MPH led a workshop for Scholars focusing on healthy living habits. Recognizing that our Scholars are kept extremely busy with school, work, and parenting, she gave them tools for incorporating exercise into their lives, making healthy yet affordable and quick meals, and more. Scholars really enjoyed this hands-on workshop—even when it came time to eat their broccoli! Scholar Emerita reported that she is “going to use what she learned today,” while Scholar Maria said that it was “very helpful, and the food was yummy!”
Down the hall, Sponsors enjoyed a workshop on financial aid led by Billy Ray Davis of Northern Virginia Community College. Our Sponsors have frequently expressed that they wanted to gain a deeper understanding of the financial aid process in order to better support their Scholars. This workshop achieved that, and allowed them to ask questions. Sponsors reported that the training was informative and engaging, and they left armed with tools and information to help their Scholars navigate the often confusing financial aid system!
After the workshops ended, Scholars, Sponsors, and kids all came together to enjoy lunch. We loved having this opportunity for the entire Generation Hope family to interact—and it also gave us the chance to serve birthday cake to the daughter of one of our Scholars, who turned 8 last week!
Thank you so much to Kristal, Billy Ray, Strayer University, and all of our wonderful childcare volunteers for helping to make this day possible!
