Meet Marikit, a Generation Hope Summer Intern

Hello! My name is Marikit Williams, and I am a Generation Hope Scholar from the very first ("Prima") class. I am also a senior at the University of Maryland College Park. I am currently raising my 3-year-old daughter while being a full time student and working a part-time job at the University of Maryland Counseling Center. In December, I will be graduating from UMD with a Bachelor of Science degree in Family Science and plan to enroll in the Urban Teacher Center teaching program and later enroll at UMD for graduate school to obtain my Master of Science degree in Couples and Family Therapy.

Before I switched my major to Family Science, I was an elementary education major. I want to teach, but I feel that in order to be a great teacher I have to understand and familiarize myself with the background of my students. Switching to family science was a great way to still be able to teach but also be able gain understanding of my students' backgrounds. I am learning about how the individual is affected not only by their family but also the by the outside world.

Having the opportunity to intern with the organization that gives so much to me is amazing.

I have not one but three careers waiting for me in my future: a teacher, a couples and family therapist, and a non-profit professional who provides support to teen parents in college. Having the opportunity to intern with the organization that gives so much to me is amazing. While I am nervous because I do not know what to expect, I am excited to have the opportunity to lay the blueprint for future interns. I cannot wait to see what this summer has in store for me!
