Scholar Program Coordinator Avery Savage smiling and holding a chalkboard with the Shakespeare quote: "Our doubts are traitors / And make us lose the good we oft might win / By fearing to attempt."

Avery Savage
Scholar Program Coordinator

Avery is incredibly honored for the opportunity to be part of the Generation Hope team. After graduating from Fairfax County Public Schools, he moved to Lafayette, Indiana and obtained a BS in Sustainable Food and Farming Systems and Natural Resources and Environmental Science from Purdue University. During his time at Purdue, he worked as the resident assistant for an LGBTQ+ living community and experienced firsthand the difficulties that underrepresented communities face in higher education. After graduation, he worked for ten months at an intentional living community in New Hampshire, but never stopped feeling called to work on making higher education accessible to anyone who desired a degree. After finding out about Generation Hope, he knew right away that it's mission to help student parents access college degrees fit with his desire to work in higher education equity. He is so excited to see what his time at Generation Hope brings and to help his Scholars achieve whatever they put their minds to. Outside of work, he can be found exploring local coffee shops, hiking around the Chesapeake Bay, and spending time with friends both new and old.

Quote:

"Our doubts are traitors / And make us lose the good we oft might win / By fearing to attempt." — William Shakespeare, Measure for Measure

Why I chose this quote:

There have been a lot of times in my life where I have given into fear and doubt, hiding away parts of myself and avoiding opportunities because I was so sure that I would fail or that other people would judge me. I think this is an incredibly human thing to do and something that everyone has done at least once. I love this quote because it's a reminder that, a lot of times, those doubts and fears aren't grounded in reality. Pushing past my doubts and fears and letting myself take opportunities even when they terrified me was the best thing that I've ever done for myself. I truly feel that when we stop listening to our fears and take steps into the unknown, no matter how scary it might be, we are able to reap good and bring joy and happiness into our lives.
